Preliminary hearing for Cedarwood Apartments homicide defendant continued until September

The preliminary hearing for an 18-year-old Lawrence man accused of killing a woman who lived two doors down from him at Lawrence’s Cedarwood Apartments has been continued until September.

Rontarus Washington Jr.

Rontarus Washington Jr. is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in connection with the slaying of Justina Altamirano Mosso, 19, of Lawrence. Mosso was discovered Nov. 9, 2014, inside her apartment at 1727 W. 24th St. Police have described the crime scene as “violent.”

Washington’s preliminary hearing, where the judge will decide if there is probable cause to bind Washington over for trial, was previously scheduled for July 9-10. After a request by the defense for additional time and a scheduling issue for the judge, the two-day hearing was rescheduled for Sept. 3-4.
