As millions hit the road, KDOT issues safety precautions for July 4 holiday

Approaching the July 4 weekend, the Kansas Department of Transportation is cautioning drivers to play it safe.

Nationally, as many as 41.9 million Americans will be traveling during the holiday, the most since 2007, the department said in a release, and the vast majority of those will be driving. Gasoline costs are approximately 25 percent lower than they were last year at this time.

Between July 3 and July 6, 2014, there were 386 crashes in Kansas, the release said. Three of those crashes involved fatalities, 95 involved injuries and 16 were alcohol related.

Many law enforcement agencies across the state will be looking for impaired drivers throughout the holiday weekend, the release said.
