Today in Lawrence: Talking about books and a new police HQ

Cooling off

It will feel a bit more winter-like today despite a mild start and highs expected to reach into the upper 40s. Later on it will dip below freezing. It was nice while it lasted.

Listen up

The next City Commission Listening Session will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Lawrence Arts Center to discuss city priorities, including the city’s previous sales tax proposal for a new police headquarters.

In November, a 0.2 percent citywide sales tax to fund the project was voted down, and city leaders are interested in talking to the public about why the sales tax did not pass and also provide an opportunity to discuss how the project can move forward.

“The need still exists for new headquarters for the Lawrence Police Department,” said Mayor Mike Amyx. “We want to gather with the community and discuss what we have right and what we could have done better. We are soliciting this information from the public and I feel like it is time to just sit down and have an old-fashioned listening session.”

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend and share ideas, opinions and thoughts on this issue.

Something to show you

Author and former Lawrence resident Jamie Quatro will give a reading from her acclaimed book of short stories Thursday at the Raven, 6 E. Seventh St.

I

At the 7 p.m. event, Quatro will read from her 2013 book “I Want to Show You More,” a collection of 15 tales with a common thread. The book has received positive reviews from both The New Yorker and the New York Times Book Review, which called it “an obsessive first collection that feels like a fifth or sixth. … Strange, thrilling, and disarmingly honest.”

The event is free and open to the public.
