25 years ago: U.S. military base ‘realignment’ may affect Sunflower

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 29, 1990:

  • Today’s front page included the news that Defense Secretary Dick Cheney was proposing closing or realigning more than 60 military bases, including the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant near DeSoto, as part of a cost-saving effort. A spokesperson in U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery’s office said there wasn’t much information available on the possible Sunflower plant closing. “Certainly Congressman Slattery is concerned about the jobs the Sunflower plant provides to the local economy,” said press secretary Ken Murphy, “but he also understands you have to respond to military budget needs.”
  • A Lawrence fast-food restaurant was robbed over the weekend in the second such incident at the site in the past three months. Police were seeking an armed man and his accomplice, who had left Taco John’s, 1101 W. Sixth, with an undetermined amount of money after robbing the restaurant just after 11 p.m. Saturday.
