Seabury girls falter late against Onaga

Bishop Seabury’s girls basketball team kept up with Onaga for three quarters on Tuesday.

In the fourth quarter, foul trouble and long stretches without scoring caught up with the Seahawks in a 48-30 loss at Seabury.

Down by 13 midway through the third quarter, the Seahawks went on a 7-0 run with layups from senior Reilly Malone and sophomore Kayleigh Boos, and a three-pointer by sophomore Celia Taylor-Puckett. But they never could get the score closer than six for the rest of the way.

“That’s the story of these kids. They work hard. They try,” Seabury coach Ted Juneau said. “We just don’t give ourselves a lot of opportunities to score the ball. When we do give ourselves opportunities, we still don’t score the ball. It’s a work in progress.”

Malone, a 5-foot-9 forward, scored the first six points for the Seahawks, driving to the hoop for a layup, hitting a jumper and scoring on a low-post move.

But a 9-3 run by Buffaloes at the end of the first quarter put Seabury in a hole that it wouldn’t be able to climb out.

The Seahawks (2-8) kept close to Onaga (1-9) in the first three quarters with key baskets from Malone, Boos, Taylor-Puckett and junior guard Regan Zaremba.

Malone led the team with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three steals before fouling out midway in the fourth quarter.

“She’s been a warrior for us all year,” Juneau said of Malone. “We probably don’t do, at times, a good job of getting her the ball. Kayleigh has really in the last two or three games developed into a scorer.”

The Seahawks were within six points in the fourth quarter after baskets by Taylor-Puckett and Boos, but once Malone fouled out, the Buffaloes went on a 12-2 run.

“They never quit,” Juneau said. “They’re playing hard defense and I think they’re doing some things better. It’s just when we get into foul trouble, then we’re really in trouble.”
