Seabury boys’ rally falls short in 42-40 loss

Bishop Seabury coach Ashley Battles talks to his team during a timeout in the fourth quarter of their game against Onaga Tuesday evening at Seabury.

Bishop Seabury’s boys basketball team features a lineup full of talented freshman and sophomore guards. When they are playing at their best, they are hard for any team to stop. But they aren’t immune from the occasional youthful mistakes.

A few turnovers and broken-down plays hurt the Seahawks in a 42-40 home loss against Onaga on Tuesday.

Playing without star sophomore guard Mikey Wycoff, who averages more than 20 points per game, Seabury led by three points with under three minutes to play when freshman Bansi King drilled a three-pointer, assisted by fellow freshman Thomas DiZerega.

But Onaga (9-4) quickly responded with a 6-0 run, with two scores in the paint and a pair of free throws. Meanwhile, the Seahawks missed three shots and turned the ball over twice.

Trailing by three with under 30 seconds left, the Seahawks drew up a play for sophomore Austin Gaumer, using King, who had hit four triples, as a decoy. But the Buffaloes switched defenders on the screen by King, and disrupted the rhythm before a three from Gaumer went off of the side of the rim.

“That’s kind of what happens when you play five seniors against three freshmen,” Seabury coach Ashley Battles said. “That’s just what you get. Our thing this year is we’re not playing against the other team. Every time we step out there, we’re playing ourselves and trying to keep getting better.”

The Seahawks (7-4) went 11 minutes without a point in the first half after King opened the game with two threes in the first 30 seconds. King, a transfer from Lawrence High, scored a game-high 14 points in his varsity debut.

“It was fun,” said King, who shot 4-of-6 from deep. “It was a great experience.”

“The kid can play,” Battles added of King. “He can shoot. He’s got a great feel. Five-foot-nine, he probably weighs a good 60-70 pounds dripping wet. But the kid can play.”

Trailing 19-10 at halftime, the Seahawks used their defense to start creating offensive momentum in the second half. Senior guard Bryce Stewart scored on three straight possessions midway in the third quarter to help Seabury pull within one point.

The Seahawks finally tied the score in the first minute of the fourth quarter on two free throws by Stewart, then traded baskets with Onaga for the next five minutes, with a few layups by freshman Zach McDermott, a layup by junior Thomas Uhler, and a three from King.

The Seahawks will face Pembroke Hill at 7:30 tonight at Seabury.
