40 years ago: KU residence halls near full occupancy

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 26, 1975:

Preliminary figures showed occupancy rates at Kansas University residence halls at about 96 percent this spring. According to J. J. Wilson, housing director, KU had more students in the dormitory system this spring than any semester since 1969. Occupancy had been reported at 93 percent in the previous fall, up from 81 percent in fall 1973. A recent count showed 3,488 students living in the KU halls. “Increased enrollment has a direct relationship to this,” Wilson said. “Inflation has something to do with it…. you have to take into consideration the singles.” He explained that in 1969-70 KU had begun allowing students to have single rooms for an extra $300 a year. The first year, 152 students had taken advantage of the single-room plan; this semester, the number was up to 986.
