Two Firebirds win wrestling titles

? Free State High senior wrestler Shayn Morris and freshman Tate Steele won championships in their weight classes Saturday at the Paola Invitational.

Steele, the top-ranked wrestler at 106 pounds in Class 6A, defeated Basehor-Linwood’s Cody Phippen, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in 4A, by a 4-1 decision to win his title. Steele improved to 25-1 on the season.

Morris won two of his three matches by pin to capture a title at 113 pounds. Junior Sid Miller also added a third-place finish at 132 pounds, winning his last two matches in sudden victory, to help the Firebirds to eighth place in the team standings.

The Firebirds will compete against Lawrence High in a City Showdown dual at 6 p.m. Wednesday at FSHS.
