40 years ago: Ground to be cleared for new KU visual arts building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 24, 1975:

Ground was to be cleared this week for Kansas University’s new visual arts building, a $5,750,700 project to be completed in the fall of 1977. The building was to enclose, for the first time, KU’s visual arts departments under one roof. In previous years, the departments had been spread throughout 13 campus buildings, according to Keith Lawton, director of facilities planning and operations. Final plans for construction of the arts building and a new law center, to be built northwest of Allen Fieldhouse, had been approved in December by the Kansas Board of Regents. Bidding date for the law building was to be Feb. 6. Some time this week, wreckers were scheduled to begin removing the roof from KU’s old mechanical engineering building, just west of Broadcasting Hall, in preparation for the arts building construction.
