100 years ago: County fair board votes to continue event despite disappointing year

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 24, 1915:

  • “At a meeting of the directors of the Douglas county Fair association yesterday afternoon in the Merchants Association rooms the directors voted to hold the Douglas county Fair again next year. The Fair last year was not as good as could have been asked on account of the rainy weather which prevailed through the four days of its duration. Everything had been planned for one of the biggest fairs that Douglas county has ever had…. Undaunted by the reverses of the last year’s fair the directors have already begun their plans for a big gathering next year.”
  • “In accordance with a request of the city commissioners the cleaners and pressers of Lawrence are considering drafting an ordinance to regulate the storing and handling of gasoline in their business. The cleaners met last night in the rooms of the Merchants Association and discussed the matter thoroughly…. Under the present laws, the cleaners claim that they are placed at such an expense in complying with the city ordinance that they can no longer maintain their business.”
  • “The firemens’ ball last night was one of the greatest successes they have ever had. There was a large crowd present and every one had a very enjoyable time. The firemen say that their receipts were good, but not as large as they had expected. The firemen had the ball very beautifully decorated for the occasion.”
  • “There is no such thing as hard times, said a floater who was in town this morning with the three rings and the mysterious card and various other tricks…. This man has a few tricks which he performs and if anyone wants to find out how he does them, ‘two bits’ talks. The man has been doing a thriving business here. He says he does not think it is right to beg, all you have to do is to make the people who have money want what you have to sell.”
  • “Jack the Peeper who was shipped from Lawrence a few days ago seems to be at his same business again in Ottawa. Ottawa reports that for the past few days there has been a man there who goes about town at night looking in at people’s windows. There was a fellow sent away from Lawrence some days ago charged with peeping in at windows. He said he was going to Ottawa and it is thought that it is the same man.”
  • “One of the biggest series of sales days that has ever been held in Lawrence will be on Friday and Saturday of this week…. Merchants in all branches of business are entering into the Bargain Days and are making preparation to handle the largest patronage they have ever had. Prices are being cut so that a dollar will go farther in the Bargain Day sales than it has ever gone at any sale or trading place…. The Rest Room in the City Hall will be open to the people as usual and the members of the Merchants’ association invite any of the people who come to Lawrence on Bargain Days to spend their extra moments at the Rest Room. It is tiresome work shopping and the merchants have provided this place of rest when the customers have time to go there for a few minutes’ rest.”
  • “E. P. Sessions of Fort Bridwell, California, is here visiting his daughter, Mrs. Rob McFarland. Mr. Sessions brought several car loads of steers and a car load of horses to the Kansas City market. The stock topped the market at Kansas City and the stockmen said it was the best grass fed stock that had come to the market this winter.”
  • “While hauling wood yesterday, Ed. Johnson of Sibley was seriously hurt when the rack stick on the wagon broke and the load slipped and pinned him to the ground. On examination it was found that the ligaments of his thighs were torn loose and it will be necessary for him to use crutches for a number of weeks.”
