Today in Lawrence: Beautiful weekend, Kawehi, ‘Big Trouble’

Back in the 50s

A couple days of routinely cold weather couldn’t keep Lawrence down. We’re back, baby, with a forecast that calls for seven straight days of highs in the 50s — or higher. We’ll crack 52 this afternoon before getting close to 60 on Saturday and Sunday. Our best chance for 60: Next Wednesday afternoon. Stay tuned.

Beat machine

We’ve written a lot at Lawrence.com — most recently this update — on local breakout musician Kawehi, who loops beats, instrumentals and vocals in real time to make magic. Well, tonight you can catch her live at The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire St., alongside Mouth and Wrong Kata Trio. Tickets are $11 to $13 for the all-ages show. Doors at 8, music at 9.

Taproom Poetry

Lawrence’s top poetry series of local and visitings authors is back at 5 p.m. Sunday. Catch Siobhán Scarry, Kyle Schlesinger and James Yeary at the Eighth Street Tap Room, 801 New Hampshire St. Hosted by Kansas University’s own mighty poet Megan Kaminsky.

So ’80s it hurts

And, even if you’re a poet, it’s hard to write anything — good or bad — about “Big Trouble in Little China” (1986), playing at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. You have to see it to believe it, Kurt Russell, Lo Pan and all. Tickets: $8 adults, $7 seniors.
