Self speaks about tonight’s Kansas-Oklahoma game on weekly Big 12 coaches call

KU coach expects Jayhawks to be energized with students back in town after semester break

Kansas University basketball’s team tonight will try to bounce back from Saturday’s loss at Iowa State when the Jayhawks play host to Oklahoma.

Coach Bill Self today spoke of the challenge on the weekly Big 12 coaches call.

“Well, first of all, it’s one game in a marathon,” Self said of the 86-81 loss to the Cyclones. “It was disappointing to us … from my standpoint, people may not buy into this, I’m actually not crushed by losing a game especially on the road to a really good team.

“What really bothers me is the manner in which we lost it, because it goes against what we actually believe in. Hey, Iowa State could beat us at their place if we play great because I think they are that talented. But the fact we helped them and gave up easy baskets in transition — things we take pride in — that’s what bothers me more than anything else.

“I expect our guys to bounce back fine. There’s no reason for us to be tired. We can rest tomorrow and the next day. I expect us to bounce back and be fresh,” Self added.

He expects a loud crowd in Allen for the 8 p.m. Big Monday tip.

“One thing I am looking forward to is I believe our students will be here. We haven’t had our students here for over a month,” Self said. Second semester classes start Tuesday. “That will be cool and that will help energize our guys.”

KU enters 14-3, 3-1 in the league; Oklahoma is 12-5, 3-2. Kansas State leads the league with a 4-1 record, followed by KU and Iowa State at 3-1. West Virginia and OU are 3-2 and Texas 2-2.

“I don’t know if this is going to play out to be true or not but four or five losses would be an unbelievable record for the team that wins it, I believe,” Self said.
