FSHS girls return to winning ways

Coming off its first loss of the season — a 30-point setback, no less — Free State High’s girls basketball team got right back in the win column Friday night with a 63-59 victory over Olathe Northwest at FSHS.

The Firebirds (8-1, ranked No. 5 in Class 6A) wanted to prove themselves following their road loss to Class 5A No. 3 Leavenworth, and they did it with three quarters of strong defense against the Ravens (6A’s No. 9 team).

“It felt good to bounce back,” senior Adriana Jadlow said after she contributed 10 points and six rebounds. “I think it shows we’re capable of not letting one loss get to us. We’re just one big family, and that helps us pull out wins against good teams like that.”

In the first 24 minutes, FSHS held ONW to 9-for-41 shooting (22 percent) and took a 48-30 lead into the fourth quarter. Jadlow, Madison Piper, Sarah Coversup, Cameryn Thomas, Jaycie Bishop and Hannah Shoemaker all scored in the third, giving Free State a comfortable advantage for the home stretch.

“Getting a lead early in the game,” Jadlow added, “before they came back, really benefited us.”

Indeed, the Ravens caught fire in the final eight minutes, making seven of 13 three-pointers in the fourth on their way to a 29-point quarter — all after scoring 30 points in the first three quarters.

FSHS coach Bryan Duncan said his players executed the defensive game plan well.

“We knew they could score in bunches, so that was critical, to get that type of lead,” Duncan said. “I don’t think we did anything really poorly in the fourth quarter. They just heated up, and we turned it over (six times), and that’s how they score.”

Olathe Northwest senior Shaleia Jamison finished with a game-high 25 points after making three fourth-quarter three-pointers.

Senior Coversup led Free State with 22 points and 10 rebounds and shot 3-for-4 in the fourth quarter. Though sophomore Piper didn’t take a shot in the final eight minutes, she scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds, while adding four assists.

The Firebirds turned it over eight times in the second quarter — when Thomas spent most of the period on the bench, nursing an injury — and went the final 4:51 of the half without making a field goal. Still, they took a 26-20 lead into halftime.

They got right back on track in the third, with Thomas on the floor.

“We started playing at our tempo,” Jadlow said of the response out of halftime, when FSHS outscored the visitors 22-10. “We did a good job of getting back to our pace.”

Free State will play Thursday at Kansas City Schlagle.
