25 years ago: City decides against downtown trolley

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 17, 1990:

Members of the Lawrence City Commission this week concluded that the time was not right for a city purchase of a replica trolley. Mayor Bob Schumm and three of the commissioners had previously expressed support for the lease or purchase of a trolley to transport shoppers between the soon-to-be-completed Riverfront Plaza and downtown Lawrence, but they had changed their minds at this week’s meeting. Citing such factors as the cost of the trolley’s purchase and operation and the continuing pressure on local tax payers, each of them agreed that the trolley wasn’t a top priority at this time. “Unless it looks like we’re completely overrun with people who come in their cars (to the riverfront project), we shouldn’t consider that option until that time,” Schumm said.
