100 years ago: ‘Friendship Club’ organized for Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 17, 1915:

  • “A new club is being organized in the city to be known as the Friendship Club. The object of which is to be mutual helpfulness. The membership will be composed of all classes of people, already about $200 of stock has been subscribed. The club rooms will be in the large stone house at 919 Delaware street, which is being elegantly fitted up for the purpose. Mr. and Mrs. Funk, who have been missionaries for some years, but are now students in the University, will occupy part of the house and be custodians of the club rooms. There is to be a reading room which will be entirely fitted up with tables, chairs, book racks, etc…. The object is to furnish a nice clean club room at a very small cost per member where there will be social, intellectual and spiritual uplift under the direction of competent managers. The rooms will be formally opened about February 1.”
  • “Two of our friends the tramp beggars are in town today systematically. They are both peg-legged and seem to be ‘pals’ for they meet every few blocks and go over the plans for the rest of their route. The police explained to them this morning that they should not beg in Lawrence, but they simply turned to some other part of town and began again. If the efforts of City Attorney Harley are not in vain he will soon have an ordinance that will allow the arrest of anyone caught begging on the streets of Lawrence or going from place to place. There is already a city ordinance that prohibits able-bodied men from begging, but it does not include a cripple.”
  • “The fire department is better equipped now for quick service in getting the water on the fire after they arrive at the scene of the fire. They have some new nozzle connections which take but one second to connect. Two of these new connections have been secured and are carried all of the time so that the firemen can get quicker results. Formerly when the nozzle had to be connected by the old method of connection they often experienced difficulty in getting the connection, but the new ones are simple and effective.”
  • “The department of streets and alleys is having the alleys cleaned up today. During the snow that has just gone off considerable trash collected in the alleys and makes a bad appearance. The department is doing all possible to keep the streets and alleys in a clean condition.”
  • “Miss Martha Mackie sustained a broken ankle when she slipped and fell on the front steps at the Mackie home, 917 Tennessee street, yesterday morning as she was starting to school. The injury was very painful and will keep Miss Mackie out of school for several weeks.”
