Firebirds’ Steele first at SMS wrestling invitational

? Free State High freshman Tate Steele took first place in the 106-pound weight class and led Free State’s wrestling team to third place in the Shawnee Mission South Invitational on Saturday.

Steele, who improved to 16-1 this year, won two matches by technical fall before defeating Washburn Rural’s Gunnar Murray, 3-0, in the championship.

Free State also had Gage Foster (152 pounds), Sid Miller (132) and Isaiah Jacobs (126) finish in second place in their respective weight classes.

The Firebirds will return to the mat on Saturday in the Blue Valley North Invitational.
