Inmate death reported at Ford County Jail

? The Kansas Bureau of Investigations says it will look into the suicide of a 61-year-old inmate at Ford County Jail.

The Ford County Sheriff tells the Dodge City Daily Globe that it’s the first suicide the jail has had in 14 years. He says no staff members saw any signs that the inmate was planning anything and that the jail’s cells are as safe as they can be.

Authorities say Rickey Schweitzer of Dodge City was found dead in his cell on New Year’s Day. He had been in the county jail since November on charges of aggravated battery, knowingly causing great bodily harm or disfigurement and theft of property or services less than $1,000.

The state’s investigation bureau investigates all in-custody deaths and is expected to finish its investigations soon.
