Bonner helps LHS boys rip Leavenworth, 83-42

A minute into the Lawrence High boys basketball team’s first game back from winter break, senior guard Anthony Bonner swiped the ball from visiting Leavenworth and took off with nothing but open hardwood between him and the rim.

“All right. Dunk time,” the Colorado State-bound shooting guard, who already had drained a three, thought to himself.

However, when Bonner glanced back to see if any Pioneers had a chance to catch him, the ball slipped out of his hands. Turnover time.

All he could do was smile at his gaffe and hustle back — the perfect response from a senior leader who would go on to score a game-high 21 points Tuesday night in an 83-42 Lions rout.

Bonner shot 8-for-10 in Lawrence’s first game in 17 days, and when he stole the ball again in the second quarter and had a chance to redeem himself, he converted a takeaway with an easy lay-in.

Class 6A’s No. 1 team took a 43-19 lead into halftime. By the third quarter, the 6-foot-2 Bonner seemed ready to up the ante. He came up with yet another steal (one of 15 Leavenworth turnovers) and pitched the ball ahead to fellow senior Ben Rajewski, then sprinted the floor hoping to get the ball back. Indeed, Rajewski rewarded him with an alley-oop and Bonner hammered it home.

“I don’t think I’ve had a better ‘oop than that before,” Bonner said. “That’s all credit to Ben.”

Rajewski, who made three of five three-pointers and delivered the assist of the night, cherished the chance to contribute to Lawrence’s growing highlight reel.

“I think that definitely put a cap on (the win),” Rajewski said.

Led by junior point guard Justin Roberts’ seven helpers, each LHS starter had at least one assist. Both Bonner and junior post player Price Morgan dished four apiece on a night LHS (7-0) constantly shared the ball and caught fire, making 30 of 42 shots (71 percent).

Said Bonner: “We look for each other like that, setting each other up, making the extra pass, throwing an alley-oop, throwing a no-look pass. Really, that was such a fun game to play and everyone did their part.”

Bonner threw down a baseline jam on a pass from Roberts, who scored 13 points in three quarters before he banged his head against teammate Logan Applegate’s shoulder. LHS junior big man Fred Brou got in on the slam action via an outlet pass from Morgan.

All the while, the unbeaten Lions feasted on Leavenworth’s zone by moving the ball and finding open shooters. They made 11 of 18 from deep. LHS coach Mike Lewis said that served as good practice for his team.

“We shot the ball really well in the first half (15-for-20 overall, 7-for-11 from three),” Lewis said. “I thought our spacing was good and our shot selection was good.”

With senior guard John Barbee out due to a sore knee, junior guard Anthony Harvey saw more minutes and came off the bench to nail four of six threes and score 14 points.

Said Rajewski: “Harvey definitely stepped up a lot, and I think he’s gonna have to continue to do that.”

The Lions play host to Olathe South on Friday.
