Source: Cal’s Rob Likens to become KU football offensive coordinator

A source with knowledge of Kansas University football coach David Beaty’s coaching staff told The Journal-World on Monday night that Cal’s Rob Likens, who served as the Golden Bears’ passing game coordinator and assistant head coach in 2014, was expected to join the KU staff as Beaty’s offensive coordinator.

Likens, 48, spent time coaching under Cal head coach Sonny Dykes at both Cal (2013-14) and Louisiana Tech (2010-12). Under Likens’ direction in 2013, Cal’s passing game set single-season school records for passing yardage (3,977), pass completions (368) and pass attempts (622), while also establishing new single-game records for passing yardage (521 vs. Washington State) and pass attempts (65 vs. Northwestern).

Dykes, known for running the Air Raid offense, which uses the entire field and employs short, fast-paced passes to multiple receivers, mentored Likens and continued to be impressed by him year after year.

“Rob has been around our type of offense for more than a decade,” said Dykes for Likens’ Cal bio. “So he really has a lot of experience with it. He’s a very knowledgeable football coach who is a tireless worker and has a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. He brings a lot of experience and really knows how to attack defenses. Plus, he is someone who really cares about his players and they enjoy playing for and being around him.”

Prior to his time with Dykes at Louisiana Tech and Cal, Likens was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Central Connecticut State (2006-09) and helped lead the Blue Devils to more wins than in any other four-year period in school history. Before coaching at CCSU, Likens spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Southeast Missouri State (2004-05), where he also worked specifically with the team’s quarterbacks and wide receivers. He spent six years at Temple (1998-2003) as the wide receivers coach and North Alabama (1992-97), where he worked with the running backs for the first season of his tenure and the wide receivers for his final five. At North Alabama, he helped the Lions become the first program in NCAA scholarship football to win three consecutive national championships, a feat that no other Division II school has ever accomplished and that has only since been replicated by FCS schools Appalachian State (2005-07) and North Dakota State (2011-13).

Likens becomes the 10th name of expected-Beaty staff members to surface, with Clint Bowen (defensive coordinator), Reggie Mitchell (likely the running backs coach/recruiting coordinator) and Louie Matsakis (likely in an off-the-field role) staying on from the previous staff, and Kevin Kane (linebackers), Klint Kubiak (wide receivers), Je’Ney Jackson (strength and conditioning), Calvin Thibodeaux (defensive line) and Gene Wier (off-the-field role) coming from outside the program. Former KU linebacker Justin Springer also is being retained from the previous regime and will join Jackson’s staff.

Beaty said Monday night, on Jayhawk Sports Weekly on KLWN, that several staff members would be confirmed any day and added that the final couple would be revealed a little later.
