Alleged Oread burglar accused of stealing championship ring, Favre jersey

A 27-year-old Lawrence man suspected of burglarizing homes in the Oread neighborhood was charged Monday with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Michael Tyrone Hill, who was arrested Saturday, is accused of entering two homes — one in the 1200 block of Tennessee Street and one in the 1300 block of Ohio Street — on Christmas Day and stealing a Brett Favre football jersey and a Major League Soccer championship ring, respectively, according to court documents.

Lawrence Police Department officers arrested Hill in the 1300 block of Tennessee Street early Saturday morning after finding him hiding between two trees in the neighborhood, LPD spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

Officers discovered Hill was in possession of items that “seemed out of place,” including jewelry and video games. Police then located the sporting memorabilia, which had been reported missing in the Dec. 25 home burglaries.

Before discovering Hill, officers had been sent to patrol the area by foot over the weekend in response to a string of about 10 burglaries that had been reported in the Oread neighborhood since mid-December, McKinley said. It is unknown whether Hill is connected to the other burglaries, which remain under investigation.

McKinley said that as Kansas University students begin returning back to Lawrence after winter break, it is likely that more burglaries will be reported, as residents discover their homes may have been entered while they were away.

“Closer to the 20th, we’ll start getting more calls when people detect their homes have been burglarized,” McKinley said.

Hill has a previous burglary and theft conviction from 2013, and has two other pending cases involving burglary and theft charges from 2014 that are ongoing. If convicted of the most recent charges, Hill could face a sentence of about nine and a half years in prison, depending on his criminal history.

Hill, who turned 27 on Sunday, is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $50,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
