Park City ? Lawrence High junior wrestler Alan Clothier and Free State freshman Tate Steele both took third place in their respective weight classes at the Class 6A state tournament on Saturday at Hartman Arena.

Clothier, a 182-pounder, won by a 6-3 decision in his third-place match against Blue Valley Northwest senior Chris Lyons after trailing 3-1 entering the final period. He won by pin in 2:56 in the consolation semifinals. Clothier finished the season with a 42-1 record.

“Sometimes kids just don’t bounce back from (a semifinals loss),” LHS coach Pat Naughton said. “That’s one thing about Alan, he just looks at it like another challenge. That’s what he did. He went out with a purpose. He went out against Junction City (in the consolation semifinals) and was all about business and really just dominated that match.”

The 106-pounder Steele won by technical fall to advance to the third-place match, then defeated Olathe North freshman Jevon Parrish by a 6-4 decision. Steele, who had a 36-2 record this year, won in the consolation semifinals by technical fall, 15-0.

“You get tough competition, so his last two matches were tremendously hard,” FSHS coach Mike Gillman said. “He dominated the kid from Hutchinson in the semifinals of the consolation, and placed third … so that’s a pretty good tournament for him.”

Free State junior Cameron Shanks (120 pounds) and freshman Isaiah Jacobs (126 pounds) advanced to the consolation quarterfinals before losing by pin and a 2-0 decision, respectively.

The Firebirds finished 19th in the team standings with 30.5 points, and the Lions took 21st with 24 points.

“There were a couple of shocking moments for a couple kids, ‘Oh, I didn’t know how crazy this was. I didn’t know how big this was,'” Gillman said. “For them to see that is awesome. For next year, the sky is the limit for us. We’ll return all of our state qualifiers except one, so the future is bright at Free State, for sure.”

Baldwin High’s wrestling team won its first-ever team title in Class 4A, edging Chanute, 113-105, for first place. Thomas Lisher (138 pounds) and Jon Pratt (152) both won state championships in their weight classes.
