KU jazz colloquium to feature scholars, performance

Scholars and artists will discuss the idea of “place” within creative improvisation during a colloquium next week at Kansas University.

Improvising in Place: An Interdisciplinary Jazz Studies Colloquium will include lectures, a film screening and a music performance. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday at The Commons in Spooner Hall, and from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Hall Center for the Humanities.

Speakers include KU professor and filmmaker Kevin Willmott, who will show video clips and discuss the period when KU students could get kicked out of practice rooms for playing jazz music.

KU Jazz Combo I will perform Philadelphia jazz selections during the event, which is free and open to the public. A full schedule can be found online.

The colloquium is in conjunction with the KU Jazz Festival, to be held March 6-7 on the KU campus.
