Stolen vehicle crash causes gas leak at Lawrence apartments

Some residents of a Lawrence apartment complex were briefly evacuated Saturday because of a gas leak caused by a stolen vehicle, according to Lawrence police.

About 12:45 p.m., a vehicle struck a gas meter, causing a gas line break at Eddingham Place Apartments, 1501 Eddingham Drive. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responded to the leak, and residents were evacuated from their apartments.

The vehicle, a pick-up truck previously reported stolen, was found abandoned a few blocks away in the 2500 block of Red Bud Lane, said Sgt. Laurie Powell.

Lawrence police were looking for a suspect Saturday afternoon but were not releasing further details at the time, Powell said.
