Crews plowing snow Monday morning; school in session in the area

It’s not a snow day for schools, but city of Lawrence street maintenance crews are out clearing roads this morning after winter weather dumped snow in the area overnight.

Snowfall accumulation totals have not been reported, but the National Weather Service in Topeka forecasted 1 to 3 inches for the Douglas County area. There is a chance of snow showers Tuesday with light accumulation possible, according to the NWS. There is another chance of snow Saturday and Sunday. It wasn’t enough to close Lawrence public schools, which opened Monday morning as scheduled.

City crews reported at 2 p.m. Sunday to pre-treat roads and have been working 12-hour shifts to plow once snowfall began. Work has continued into Monday morning.

Motorists should consider leaving extra time for travel in the morning and, as always, slow down when driving.
