Fourth-quarter rally lifts Seabury girls to victory

Seabury junior Regan Zaremba (4) starts the break after taking the ball away from Hyman Brand junior Lainie Kaseff (42) during their game Thursday at Seabury.

With a few key players in foul trouble, Bishop Seabury’s girls basketball team just wanted to keep the score close in the third quarter before trying to make a run in the fourth quarter.

Trailing by six entering the final period, Seabury senior forward Reilly Malone gave her team a lift with a flurry of points and rebounds to propel the Seahawks to a 36-31 victory over Hyman Brand at Seabury.

Malone opened the fourth quarter with a layup-and-the-foul bucket and she made the free throw. Three minutes later, the Seahawks tied the game with a layup by Malone, and went ahead for good after sophomore guard Celia Taylor-Puckett grabbed a steal and junior guard Regan Zaremba knocked down a three-pointer.

The Seahawks (3-12) outscored Hyman Brand, 13-2, in the fourth quarter and snapped a five-game losing streak when they lost by an average of 30.2 points per game.

“Obviously (Malone) is important to us,” Seabury coach Ted Juneau said. “When we have basically a six-man rotation and we get two or three people in foul trouble, we’ve got to patch some things up. Once we got everyone back together, I thought we’d be fine.”

After Zaremba’s go-ahead three gave the Seahawks a 34-31 lead, the Rams (8-6) missed their last four shots and turned the ball over twice.

Sophomore forward Kayleigh Boos added a long jump shot to give the Seahawks a two-possession lead with 1:29 left before they began to run out the clock.

The 5-foot-7 Boos had a team-high 11 points, scoring four of the team’s six points in the third quarter without Malone on the court.

“I think it’s mostly confidence,” Boos said. “Last year, I was just a freshman starter and I didn’t know what was going on. But I think everyone cheering me on … and I’ve been coming in after school and shooting, it’s definitely just confidence with the support of my team and everything.”

Malone played the entire fourth quarter with four fouls, and had five points and six rebounds in the final period. She finished with a team-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven points and two steals.

“I kind of learned not to go out and make silly mistakes,” Malone said. “But with four fouls, it made me more aware of where people are so I wouldn’t catch my fifth (foul).”

How big of an impact does Malone make on the court?

“She really helps bring the intensity level (up) and everything,” Boos said. “She makes us want to work hard because we want to win for her. She’s definitely our MVP.”

The Seahawks played zone defense for most of the second half because of their foul trouble, and received solid defense from junior Tanisha Kaur and freshman Peggy Zeng.

Meanwhile on offense, Zaremba added 10 points and Taylor-Puckett had seven points and eight rebounds.

“It’s about some kids gaining confidence,” Juneau said. “It’s about other kids understanding their roles. I thought they did a good job doing that tonight.”

The Seahawks will face Metro Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Seabury.
