25 years ago: State Civil Rights chair concerned about recent societal trends

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1990:

Lawrence attorney Andrew Ramirez spoke to a reporter this week about two factors that concerned him about the state of civil rights in Kansas. The first was included in the annual report of the Kansas Commission on Civil Rights, which Ramirez chaired. According to the 1989 report, released in late January, there had been an “unprecedented” number of complaints alleging discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations in Kansas filed with the commission. The 1,349 complaints filed during fiscal year 1989 had represented a 20 percent increase over the previous fiscal year. Ramirez said he was also worried about a “racist backlash” apparent in music, television, and personal communication. “Arts and entertainment reflect society and its attitudes,” he said.
