25 years ago: KU law professor recalls earlier land-use issue

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 11, 1990:

Kansas University law professor Mike Davis, who had recently met with Lawrence city commissioners to discuss legal issues related to land-use planning, today recalled an incident of planning that involved his own home. “I remember the only time I recused myself from the (Lawrence-Douglas County) Planning Commission,” Davis said. “They have those fraternities up there on Emery Road. Somebody owned a lot back there and wanted to build a bar behind them. It would have been a booming place. But I live right down the block. I announced I was recusing myself because I lived 82 beer bottles, laid end to end, from the proposed site.” Davis had served on the planning commission during the 1970s, at one point as its chair.
