40 years ago: President Ford to visit Topeka

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1975:

  • After several days of speculation, Gov. Robert F. Bennett had announced the previous week that President Gerald Ford would visit Topeka in three days to brief Midwestern governors on his energy and economic proposals. Ford’s original plan to stay in the capital city for four hours had now stretched into nine or 10 hours. Ford was to arrive on Feb. 11 to address a joint session of the Kansas Legislature, followed by a luncheon with 10 governors at Cedar Crest, the executive mansion. About 150 members of the White House press corps and at least that number of Kansas reporters were expected to attend an evening press conference at the Ramada Inn in downtown Topeka.
  • Two Baldwin area men were being held at the Douglas County Jail today in lieu of $25,000 bond, charged with the kidnapping of a Baldwin police officer. Jimmy Pat McGinnis, 19, and Robert Wagner, 21, had both surrendered to Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies early this morning.
