FSHS second, LHS fifth at league swimming

Free State High's Jordan Portela competes in the 100 yard butterfly event at the 2015 boys Sunflower League Championships Saturday in Olathe.

? Free State High senior swimmer Jack Ziegler felt good entering the Sunflower League finals on Saturday afternoon at Prairie Trail Junior High.

When he jumped into the pool, he felt even better. One day after tying the league record in the 50-yard freestyle, Ziegler shattered the league meet’s record and his own school record with a time of 21.08, capturing a league title.

Once Ziegler saw his time on the scoreboard, he jumped in the air, and his teammates cheered from the pool deck. But that wasn’t the only celebration as Ziegler also won the 100 freestyle, sophomore Jordan Portela won two league titles and Free State had two champion relay teams, which both broke league meet records.

The Firebirds took second place in the league standings, their highest finish since 2004. Shawnee Mission East won the league’s team title with 342 points, 79 ahead of Free State.

“We looked at (SM East’s) depth, we knew ahead of time,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “So if you can’t win the whole thing, what can you do? You can set records. You can have league champions. You can just perform your best, and we’re really proud of that.”

Ziegler, who broke the school record in the 50 free during the first meet of the season and has lowered it twice in the past two days, said he entered the season with a new mindset, which has helped him add some extra confidence and an extra gear in the pool.

“It takes quite a bit of work to improve on my time,” Ziegler said. “But it’s all worth it.”

Portela won a league title in the 200 freestyle, which was right after he took first place with Ziegler, freshman Evan Eskilson and senior Josh Terrell in the Firebirds’ 200 medley relay, which broke Free State’s record from last year’s league meet.

Though Portela’s time in the 200 freestyle wasn’t exactly what he was hoping for because of the energy he spent in the relay, he made up for it in the 100 butterfly, winning a league title in 50.72 seconds, breaking former Firebird Ben Sloan’s league meet record from 2012 and topping his own school record from last year.

“It felt good,” Portela said. “It was smooth. That’s what I was really focusing on. If it’s not smooth, it hurts, so it’s hard to bring it back. But it felt smooth the entire race.”

In the final race of the meet, Ziegler, Portela, Eskilson and senior Nolan Stoppel sped past their competition in the 400 freestyle relay, and won a league title in a meet-record 3:14.12, topping a mark set by SM East last year.

Eskilson added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, Terrell took second place in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and sophomore Evan Yoder was third in the breaststroke and fourth in the individual medley. Stoppel also took sixth in the 100 freestyle.

“It was faster than I thought I was going to go,” said Terrell, who lowered his times from prelims. “I hate getting second place. So I’m frustrated by that, but it was a very good swim. I’m happy where I’m at.”

Lawrence High freshman Stephen Johnson took second place in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle, helping the Lions to fifth place in the team standings.

“I was loose,” Johnson said. “I was excited. I was pumped. We did good, everyone did. I might not have dropped time, but I held my ground and I did good.”

The Lions also had two relays in the finals, taking fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with Johnson, Alex Heckman, Ellis Springe, Chase Odgers and Isaac Springe.

“Last year we were eighth, so we really did improve a lot this year,” LHS coach Kent McDonald said. “It’s a young team, we only have one senior place, so it looks good for next year. I always want to be higher.”

The two schools will compete in Free State’s Last Chance Meet at the Indoor Aquatic Center at 4 p.m. Thursday, before focusing on state, which begins at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 in Topeka.
