Burghart wins for seniors, but Lions fall

When Lawrence High senior wrestler Cy Burghart stepped onto the mat Wednesday night, he wasn’t just competing for himself.

Burghart was the only senior who wasn’t sidelined for Senior Night, a dual against Baldwin at LHS.

With fellow seniors Malik Davis, Jhon Jacob and Tristan Star watching, Burghart picked up a pin 2:18 into his match at 152 pounds. Burghart was one of the four Lions to win matches in a 53-19 loss to the Bulldogs.

“On Senior Night, you always want your seniors to win,” LHS coach Pat Naughton said. “Him out there doing it for the rest of the seniors, I think, was pretty special. Cy is that type of way. He always puts everybody else ahead of himself, and that’s the type of kid he is.”

Lawrence Highs freshman Jay Cheatham looks to roll out of a move by Baldwin's Ben Morgenstern in the 126-pound class Wednesday night at LHS.

Lawrence High senior wrestlers, from left, Malik Davis, Tristan Star, John Jacob and Cy Burghart, are honored on senior night on Wednesday February 4, 2015.

Burghart led 5-0 after the first period, as he earned points on a few takedowns, but just couldn’t find the right angle for a pin. However, just 18 seconds into the second period, he finally made his move for the win.

“That was a good way to end it — a good way to end my career here (at home),” Burghart said. “In front of my friends and stuff, it was awesome.”

The Lions also received wins from sophomore Cade Burghart at 132 pounds, sophomore Santino Gee at 170 and junior Alan Clothier at 182.

Clothier faced Baldwin junior Joel Katzer, the fifth-ranked wrestler at 170 pounds in Class 4A. After a scoreless first period, Clothier controlled the rest of the match with his strength and quickness.

“He was really good at neutralizes,” Clothier said of Katzer. “He was really strong. That’s good. I need to wrestle some strong kids because most kids at 182 are big. They cut (weight) from 195.”

Clothier, who owns a 34-0 record this year, won by a 12-0 majority decision, but said he still has plenty to work on, especially his shots and better protection of his legs.

“(Katzer) stepped up and challenged Alan, pretty much,” Naughton said. “(Katzer) wrestles a different style, which is nice for Alan to see. He’s not always seeing the same guys at 182. He’s getting a nice, wide variety.”

At 160 pounds, LHS sophomore Tucker Wilson went back and forth against Baldwin’s Owen Tuckfield before falling in a 5-4 decision.

Baldwin, the second-ranked team in Class 4A, sat five of its regular starters, but had several wrestlers move up in weight and fight to a victory. Sophomore Thomas Lisher jumped up to 145 pounds and picked up a pin, senior Joel Hartford won by pin at 195 pounds and senior Wyatt Parmley pulled out a 6-2 decision at heavyweight.

“There were some great matches, and that’s what I’m really looking for, win or lose,” BHS coach Kit Harris said. “Luckily, we got a lot of depth. We’ve got backups at every weight. That really helps for duals, for sure.”

After the Lions’ final dual of the season, they are focused on their next three tournaments this month: the Sunflower League meet, regionals and state.

“I’m pretty excited,” Burghart said. “This will be a fun time. I’m ready to go. This week off will be good for us to get better and get ready for the three tournaments coming up.”

The Lions will return to the mat on Feb. 14 for the Sunflower League meet, which begins at 9 a.m. in Leavenworth.
