100 years ago: Last remaining Eudora founder passes away at age 87

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 5, 1915:

  • “Joseph Hertz, age 87, died this morning at his home in Eudora. Mr. Hertz was the only surviving member of the company which laid out the townsite for Eudora. These plans were started in the spring of 1857. Even in his extreme old age Mr. Hertz was always active in his work for the common good and was held in high respect by his fellow townsmen. During the last few months Mr. Hertz has been in poor health brought on by old age. The funeral will occur tomorrow…. Interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Eudora.”
  • “Much excitement was caused last night about ten o’clock by the ringing of the Watkins National Bank burglar alarm. The alarm is controlled by time and as there were employees working in the bank at that hour the door had not been closed. Consequently the alarm rang on the door being closed.”
  • “Nearly two hundred members of the Douglas County Farmers’ institute met in session today, faced the disagreeable weather and the journey over roads in rough condition, to attend the dinner served in their honor by the People State bank and the members of the association in the rooms of the Merchants’ association. The farmers turned out in numbers from ever part of the county, some having driven since early in the morning to be present at this event, but expressed themselves as more than well repaid for the effort.”
  • “When a verdict is returned in the case of the State vs. Soles which is being argued this afternoon one of the shortest criminal dockets in recent terms of the district court will close. Soles is charged with being a persistent violator of the prohibitory law.”
  • “The large rooming house at 12th and Indiana has been purchased by J. W. Schulz who has already taken possession. Mr. Coleman took in payment Mr. Schulz’s property at Fowler, Colo.”
  • “The Jayhawker basketball quintet will attempt to annex another victory Saturday night when they meet the Washburn five in Robinson gymnasium. This will be the first game on the home court since Nebraska was routed some two weeks ago, after having dropped two games to the Kansans. Again Coach Hamilton is confident of a victory over the Ichabods, although the Jayhawkers have not been practicing this week on account of the mid-year quizzes.”
