Lawrence bicyclist struck by car near Ninth and Ohio streets

A Lawrence bicyclist was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries after being struck by a station wagon around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lyle Swartz of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said.

The female driver was westbound on Ninth Street before turning into a parking lot at the intersection of Ninth and Ohio streets.

When the driver turned, the bicyclist, a man in his 20s, struck the passenger side of the car and smashed into the windshield. The bicyclist was in the bicycle lane at the time of the collision.

“It appears the motorist failed to yield to the cyclist,” said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley.

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, McKinley said.

His condition is currently being assessed at the hospital, LMH officials said.
