Communities in Schools supports students, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The organization needs volunteers to assist with the drop-out prevention programs Reality U at Free State High School on March 4 and 5. Reality U provides teens a look at their potential lifestyles at the age of 26, based on their answers to a previously completed survey and their current GPA. “Life stations” such as housing, transportation, child care, banking and supermarket, make up Reality U. Volunteers work at each station, providing prepared program information to as students make purchasing decisions. Various shifts are available. Training will be provided. • The American Cancer Society Relay for Life Fundraising Team is looking for volunteers to serve on two committees June 12 and 13. Volunteers are needed for the Rally Team, which promotes the relay throughout the community, accepts donations, sells luminaria, distributes fliers and shares photos from the event. Volunteers are also needed for the Kids’ Games Sub-Committee, which will plan and run kids’ games at the relay. If you are interested, please contact DouglasCountyRFL@gmail.com.

• Lawrence Habitat for Humanity works with low-income families to give them the opportunity to own their own home. Habitat is searching for individuals to join the Women Build Committee. Women Build is Habitat’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes for the community. No experience is necessary. • The Kansas University Audio-Reader Network provides print-disabled people in Kansas and Missouri with access to the printed word and other information. Audio-Reader is looking for volunteers to read Kansas City-area newspapers from the Audio-Reader studio at Alphapointe, 7501 Prospect Ave. Volunteers must be able to travel to that location and have weekday morning availability. Volunteers must pass an audition consisting of a 100-word pronunciation test and a series of reading samples. The next audition date is March 10. • Dads of Douglas County is a nonprofit organization of men and women dedicated to supporting fathers in being caring, engaged parents, and increasing positive outcomes for fathers and their children. The agency is looking for volunteers to fill two positions on the board of directors. Openings include the communications coordinator, who develops, guides, and implements the strategy for all promotional and marketing efforts, ensuring consistent articulation and communication of the mission of Dads of Douglas County. A second opening is for treasurer, whose primary responsibility is the management and reporting of the organization’s finances. • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a “Little” the invaluable gift of your friendship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for a male mentor to spend time with a 6-year-old boy on the waiting list. He is friendly, outgoing and enjoys spending time outdoors. He is interested in cooking, playing games and doing arts and crafts.
