The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will kick off 2016 with a bit of exercising on New Year’s Day.

Hikes will be held at state parks around Kansas, including Clinton State Park, to promote the department’s First Day Hike program.

According to a news release from the department, the 2-mile North Shores Trail is moderate in difficulty. Hikers should be age 5 or older to participate, and any pets who attend should be on leashes.

Hikers will meet at the Clinton State Park office, 798 North 1415 Road, at 1 p.m. Friday.

According to a National Association of State Park Directors news release, all 50 states are participating in the annual First Day Hike program, which is in its fifth year. The hikes are meant to encourage people to make a New Year’s resolution to health and happiness, as well as to “reconnect with nature on guided outdoor adventures,” according to the release.
