Latest weather service forecast calls for freezing rains, icy roads through 4 p.m.; see map of city streets to be treated

Freezing rain and icy roads are what Lawrence residents should be on the lookout for today, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service in Topeka.

In their latest report, forecasters from the National Weather Service are predicting freezing rain is possible from Burlington to Lawrence and points east through 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.

“It’s winding down now,” said Meteorologist Brian Barienbruch. “The snow itself should come to an end around 4 or so and we may see some snow flakes or a bit of a freezing drizzle lingering until maybe 6.”

Generally, forecasters are predicting the winter storm to involve snow to the west of Lawrence and freezing rain and ice in and east of Lawrence. The potential for a tenth to two-tenths of an inch of ice is possible in the area, according to the report.

Across northeast Kansas, forecasters are calling for the winter storm to begin to taper off after 2 p.m., and for the weather system to have exited the region by 10 p.m. Monday.

Lawrence snow plow crews currently are treating city streets. The city follows a priority route system to determine which streets get plowed and treated first. Click on the map to the left for more details.
