Douglas County Commission to consider plan for McCollum Hall rubble

Rubble remains after the implosion of KU's McCollum Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

In addition to the previously set agenda for today’s meeting, Douglas County Commissioners will be asked to approve a disposal plan to allow the Hamm Quarry to make use of McCollum Hall demolition materials.

Since McCollum Hall was demolished on the Kansas University campus on Nov. 25, some of the rubble has remained at the site.

Mary Miller, city/county planner, said in a memo to county commissioners that much of that rubble will be used to “fill in the footprint” of the building, but the remainder needs to be moved off-site. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment inspected materials Tuesday to determine if they meet criteria for “clean rubble,” and the commission will hear the results of that inspection at today’s meeting.

If the debris does meet the definition of “clean rubble,” and commissioners approve, the materials will be used in reclamation work at the Hamm Quarry in northern Douglas County.

County Administrator Craig Weinaug said Tuesday that after the demolition, the county discovered that proper permits were not in place for the disposal plan.

The Douglas County Commission meets at 4 p.m. each Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St. A full agenda is available online at douglascountyks.org.
