United Way of Douglas County projects 10 percent shortfall in 2015 campaign

The United Way of Douglas County is projecting a 10 percent shortfall for its 2015 fall fundraising campaign, according to a Thursday announcement from the organization.

The campaign, which began in September, has a goal of raising $1.68 million, which was the amount donated in 2014. Based off donations so far, it’s estimated United Way will gather about $168,000 less than it did last year.

Colleen Gregoire, the United Way chapter’s vice president and director of the campaign, said some of the fundraising would continue into January and February.

“I still anticipate that we’re going to be 8 (percent) to 10 percent short on dollars needed to fully fund our community partners in 2016,” she said.

Gregoire said she was positive about the chapter reaching its goal of having 6,000 donors. On Thursday, she had counted 4,131.

Money gathered through the campaign will go next year to 28 service organizations in Douglas County. The United Way’s goals for Douglas County in 2016 are broadly defined as education, health and self-sufficiency.

During its 2014 campaign, United Way was close to reaching its goal of $1.7 million. Gregoire said $1.68 million was enough to meet the organization’s budgetary goals, but the community groups it partners with have said there is a need for more.

“We constantly hear from our community partners that the need is so much greater than what United Ways is funding them currently,” Gregoire said. “It’s almost impossible to realize the true scope of the need. But, I think United Way is a great place for people to help address that by helping so many organizations with one gift.”
