100 years ago: Ad concerning Lawrence dog brings unexpected results

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1915:

  • “That everybody reads the Journal-World want page was well known, but there was no evidence that the town dogs kept a watchful eye on the page until yesterday. Mrs. Fred Morris published in the Journal-World a notice that she would prosecute any person who took her dog ‘Blackie’ out hunting. Last night, Blackie, after the afternoon round of his usual activities on the street, which must have included the perusal of the Journal-World want page, carried home on his collar a tag with this message to his mistress: ‘Mrs. Fred Morris: I like to go hunting and I read what you said about prosecuting people about taking me out hunting. Please don’t arrest George Lake or Fred Clarke. They show me a good time and always feed me on rabbit and chicken bones afterward. They are good friends of mine. R. S. V. P. – Your faithful, “Blackie.”‘”
  • “The groups of Lawrence women who are interested in starting war relief work here were gratified by the immediate response with which they were met yesterday at the various women’s clubs where the prospective work was explained yesterday afternoon. They wish, however, to interest every woman in Lawrence. A little time devoted to this work by every individual will mean a really appreciable help from Lawrence in this time of great need.”
  • “Those who wish to enjoy their Christmas dinner the more by the thought that they were instrumental in adding to the cheer of others less fortunate will have the opportunity to do so by cooperation with the Social Service League through a plan the league has formed for its Christmas work. A wagon will be on hand in South park when the people of the entire Lawrence community assemble to celebrate with song around the municipal Christmas tree. This wagon will be used for receiving the contributions in the way of food that may be bought at that time. Everyone is urged to make the best of this opportunity…. A scarcity of warm clothing is being felt by the Social Service league in their relief work. Those having discarded clothing which will warm some one less fortunate are asked to allow the Social Service League to help them dispose of it in the best possible manner.”
  • “If it is anything fancy or new in barber work that you want done you always know that you can get it at Houk’s Barber Shop at 915 Mass. St. John Houk started this place several years ago and he knows that people appreciate the work they get there because they keep coming. Any time you pass Houk’s Barber Shop you will see that they are busy. And that is a pretty good recommendation. The place is equipped to give you anything in the barber line, shave, shampoo, haircut, massage, no matter what you want, have it done at Houk’s and it will be done right.”
