The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for all residents, focusing efforts on health, self-sufficiency and education. The United Way is looking for volunteers to assist with its Tools for Schools project Jan. 5 and 6. Four to six volunteers are needed the afternoon of Jan. 5 to prepackage school supplies to be picked up at the United Way building by school representatives Jan. 6. This is a great project for small groups looking to volunteer together as well as a good opportunity for individuals. Assist Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help with their Adopt-a-Family distribution. Volunteers will sort and set up donations on Dec. 17 and 18. Volunteers are needed on Dec. 21 and 22 for assisting with distribution of donations. Please contact Jim Evers at jim_evers@salvationarmy.org or call 785-764-0962 for more information.

Help a survivor

The Willow Domestic Violence Center provides safe shelter, advocacy and hope for survivors of domestic and family violence in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties. The Willow has many ongoing volunteer opportunities including Administrative Office Assistant, Shelter Advocate, Community Educator, Community Advocate, Marketing and Publicity, Court Advocate, Special Events and Projects, Child Activities Assistant and more. The volunteer opportunities require varying levels of training, ranging from six to 40 hours, dependent upon the opportunity. Feed the community

Christmas is just around the corner, and Just Food is still looking for volunteers to help pack food boxes. Just Food will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 20 and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 21 and 22 distributing boxes to clients. Master the castle

The Old Castle Museum is the oldest college building in Kansas and is located on the campus of Baker University in Baldwin City. The Old Castle Museum is seeking volunteers to greet and interact with museum visitors. Two or three hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is all that is required. Become a big

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a young boy in our community? Big Brothers Big Sisters has more than 40 boys waiting for a one-on-one mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for a male mentor 18 years or older to spend a few hours a week with a 13-year-old boy. This young man is smart, charming and funny. He is open to any activities — he enjoys sports, art, dancing and school.
