Interim director of KU Office of Multicultural Affairs is third finalist for position

The last of three finalists to become director of Kansas University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs is from in-house.

Precious Porras, who has been interim director of the office since May, will give a public presentation on “Strategic Leadership at KU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs” at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kansas Room in the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd.

KU announced Porras’ name Wednesday. Finalists Festus Addo-Yobo, director of Black Programs in the division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at New Mexico State University, and Andre Brown, program director of TRiO Student Support Services at Arizona State University, gave presentations earlier this week.

As interim director Porras has led and managed the office, supervising five full-time staff and three graduate assistants, according to KU’s announcement. She has been with OMA since 2005, first as a Hawk Link Retention Specialist and most recently as associate director of diversity education and social justice programs. She has taught multiple academic courses during her time with OMA and been involved with multiple multicultural organizations at KU.

Previously, Porras was a care manager for Kansas Children’s Service League, where she worked with foster children, homes and adoptions.

Porras has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Northwest Missouri State University and a master’s degree in counselor education from Emporia State University, according to KU. She expects to complete a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from KU in 2016.
