FSHS swimmers win quad

Free State High School swimmer Brandon Bunting, right, is congratulated by his teammates after his finish in the boys 50-yard freestyle event during a Free State and Lawrence High School quad swim meet Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 at FSH.

Free State High’s boys swimming and diving team only won three of the 12 events at its season-opening home quadrangular Wednesday, but the Firebirds showed off their depth, cruising to a team victory.

The Firebirds scored 453 points, outlasting runner-up Lawrence High, which finished with 367 points at the Indoor Aquatic Center.

Free State senior Ethan Kallenberger won in the 100 butterfly, junior Chad Bourdon posted the top score in the one-meter dive, and the Firebirds added a victory in the 200 freestyle relay with Kyle Sadosky, Landon Sloan, Brandon Bunting and Carson Ziegler.

Bourdon, who trained all offseason at Kansas University, scored 267.65 points during his diving routine, which was a few points higher than he started with at last year’s season-opening meet.

“I was feeling good for this season,” Bourdon said, “and now I’m like really pumped for the rest of it.”

Despite only winning three races, the Firebirds placed three swimmers in the top-five of six events to rack up points. Kallenberger added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke, Brett Carey took third in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Matthew Wilkus was second in the 200 individual medley and Brandon Bunting took runner-up in the 50 freestyle. Chad Andersen also took second place in the 500 freestyle.

“It feels really good,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “The depth really helped. … If you look at the seed time of them coming in, you can see that they dropped a ton of time from either last year or our intrasquad (scrimmage).”

Free State junior Corey Schultz-Bever took second place in the 100 breaststroke. He rejoined the team after moving to Bloomington, Indiana for his sophomore year.

“I didn’t make my best times or anything, but I did pretty well,” said Schultz-Bever, who also took fifth in the 200 individual medley. “I got close to making my best times. It was a real confidence booster.”

Lawrence High sophomores Stephen Johnson (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Isaac Springe (200 individual medley) and Alex Heckman (100 freestyle and 100 backstroke) all won events, along with the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay featuring those three sophomores, Chase Odgers and Patrick Oblon.

“It was pretty good, 100 free that was my best time overall in club and high school,” said Heckman, who swam the 100 freestyle in 50.04 seconds. “The medley (relay) was really strong.”

Odgers added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly and senior diver Izaiah Bowie took third place in the one-meter dive. However, the Lions were hoping to compete better against Free State, which is still without some of its top swimmers until after winter break.

“Just like last year, we saw that this first half of the season was when we had a chance to win,” Heckman said. “We only have two chances: today and then next week. So we’ve really got to push it next week.”

Both schools will compete in the Manhattan triangular on Wednesday.
