Man charged in connection with January shooting pleads no contest

A Kansas City, Kan., man charged in connection with a January shooting at a Lawrence home has pleaded no contest to attempted second-degree murder, according to a news release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

Dashawn C. Clayborn

Dashawn C. Clayborn, 23, is accused of shooting a man following a dispute over a piece of missing property, the release said. Clayborn was arrested the morning of Jan. 30 after allegedly stealing a car and leading Lawrence police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on Kansas Highway 10 near Eudora, according to court documents.

The victim, Stephen Patterson, was flown in critical condition to Kansas University Hospital with gunshots to his face and back shortly after midnight on Jan. 30. He was released from the hospital three days later.

Clayborn faces a range of 55 to 247 months — or 4 years, 7 months to 20 years, 7 months — in prison for attempted second-degree murder. His sentence will depend on his prior criminal history, the release said.

Clayborn’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 23. District Judge Peggy Kittel presided over the case.
