40 years ago: KU reaches record-setting fall enrollment

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 25, 1975:

  • Fall enrollment at Kansas University set a record this week Gil Dyck, dean of admissions and records, reported that 21,565 students were registered for the first day of classes — an increase of 1,210, or more than 5 percent over the previous fall’s record total. The figures included both the Lawrence campus and the KU Medical Center at Kansas City. Dyck reported that, of the 19,807 students that had passed through Allen Fieldhouse the previous week, 11,183 were men and 8,624 were women. The crowds visibly squeezing into the fieldhouse for enrollment had given KU officials a hint that it would be a record semester, but the exact figure were not known until the computer cards had been processed. The increases at KU were in keeping with a nationwide trend this fall, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Elsewhere in Kansas, a record total of 17,500 students were expected at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
  • The Demolition Derby at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Friday night had resulted in a ruckus leading to five arrests. Police said the disturbance had started when the husband of the winning driver and another driver had become involved in an argument. After they began to scuffle, other persons had joined in, until 24 fighters were involved. Police arrested five men after the incident.
