Bill Self turns ticket-seller

Kansas women's basketball coach Brandon Schneider, football coach David Beaty and men's basketball coach Bill Self speak at KU Traditions Night Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium. The annual event held before the start of each new school year aims to teach incoming freshmen about the traditions that make KU unique. The three coaches all agreed that their favorite tradition was the Rock Chalk Chant at the end of games, signaling to the other team that the game was over.

Bill Self, who doesn’t have to worry about attendance at his sold-out Kansas University men’s basketball games, may have helped sell some tickets for a pair of first-year Jayhawk coaches Saturday in Memorial Stadium.

“Brandon (Schneider, KU women’s hoop coach) is just getting started. David (Beaty, football coach) is just getting started. I’d encourage everybody to take pride and be part of building something special because it can be done here,” Self, KU’s 13th-year coach, said to a couple thousand students who gathered for Traditions Night.

The student body generally packs men’s basketball games — and entertains everybody with their banners of support and gyrations of various kinds during opposition free throws — but has had spotty attendance at football contests and virtually no presence at all at women’s hoop games the past several years.

“In ’08, I don’t know if you remember … we cut down nets, and they ate oranges all night,” Self said of KU winning the national title in hoops and the Orange Bowl in football the same school year. “It takes everybody. Nothing recruits better for basketball than people in the football stands. Nothing helps football more than obviously people in the stands.”

Beaty and Schneider also spoke to what appeared to be a receptive batch of students in the KU graduating Class of 2019.

“In two weeks, at 11 o’clock in the morning, we’re going to need every one of you here,” former Texas A&M assistant Beaty said of students attending KU’s opener against South Dakota State on Sept. 5. “We’re going to need you out there early, and we’re going to need you to stay late, because you guys are going to be the magic.”

Noted Schneider, who comes to KU from Stephen F. Austin: “Without question, I know the (men’s) basketball program has the best student body support, bar none, in the country. I know it’s a big goal of ours to earn that same kind of support as we move forward.”

Yakwe to enroll at St. John’s: Kassoum Yakwe, a 6-7 forward who was a teammate of KU freshman Cheick Diallo last year at Our Savior New American in New York, committed to St. John’s over Oregon on Sunday.

Yakwe will reclassify to the Class of 2015 and enroll at St. John’s this week, Zagsblog.com reports. Like Our Savior grad Diallo, he hopes ultimately to have his materials approved by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

A source told Zagsblog.com that Yakwe’s eligibility is a “work in progress.” Diallo, of course, is still waiting on word from the NCAA whether he can play in what draft experts believe will be a one-and-done stay at KU.

UK adds big man: Kentucky, which plays KU in Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 30, has added yet another player to its roster for the upcoming season.

Tai Wynyard, a 6-10, 265-pound center from New Zealand who was ranked No. 43 in the Class of 2016 by Rivals.com, told VaughtsViews.com he will arrive at UK in December and play second semester of the 2015-16 campaign.

UK recently added point guard Jamal Murray of Canada and power forward Isaac Humphries of Australia to a team that is bringing in Rivals.com’s No. 1-rated player, Skal Labissiere of Haiti.

Bam goes for 21: Edrice “Bam” Adebayo, who has KU on his list of prospective schools, scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Team Doo Be Doo to an 111-110 victory over Team EZ Pass in Saturday’s Under Armour Elite 24 game in Brooklyn, New York. Adebayo, a 6-9 senior from High Point Christian in North Carolina, is ranked No. 7 in the Class of 2016 by Rivals.com. KU target Josh Jackson, 6-7 senior from Prolific Prep in Napa, California, who is ranked No. 1 nationally, had 12 points and seven boards for the winners. Frank Jackson and Billy Preston had 20 and 16 points respectively for the losing team. Preston, 6-9 junior from Dallas who is ranked No. 6 in the Class of 2017, has KU on his list of schools. Jackson, 6-2 senior from Highland, Utah, does not have KU on his list.

Kaun update: No financial terms have yet been revealed regarding Sasha Kaun’s deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers that was agreed to Saturday. Cleveland.com says it’s a two-year contract, with no team or player option. The former KU forward earned $2.9 million last year with CSKA Moscow.
