40 years ago: Law enforcement interrupts marijuana pickup at KCI

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 24, 1975:

  • Federal agents stepped in this week when two men took two foot lockers from a baggage carousel at Kansas City International Airport, resulting in a seizure of 125 pounds of marijuana valued at $18,250. The two men, who said they were 27 years old and who gave Lawrence addresses, were being held in jail at Platte City, Mo., near the airport. No charges had yet been filed. Federal agents in Austin, Texas, had collaborated with Kansas City agents in organizing the bust. Officers at Austin had spotted the foot lockers, on the basis of a tip. With a search warrant, they had opened the lockers at the Austin airport, taken samples of the contents, resealed them, and sent them on to their planned destination. On their arrival at KCI, agents said, they had watched the two men claim the lockers and carry them to a car in an airport parking lot. The men had been arrested as they loaded their luggage into the car.
  • Progress was reported to be lagging on two major Kansas University construction projects. KU’s new $5.75 million visual arts building, needed to alleviate overcrowding at the School of Fine Arts, had been originally set for opening in fall, 1977, but it was not yet off the drawing board and wouldn’t be for at least another month, architects said this week. The KU Medical Center’s giant clinical facilities building still appeared to be in a limbo of redesign and indecision, despite a looming deadline for accepting or rejecting bids on the project.
