KU Today: Throwback Coke bottles commemorate KU 150

At various locations on campus this year, you can get a small keepsake along with your soda. Coca-Cola is rolling out special glass bottles for Kansas University’s 150th anniversary.

“It seemed like a commemorative bottle that fans, students and alumni could keep on their shelf would be a good way to do it,” said Claudia Larkin, director of marketing for KU Memorial Unions.

Coca-Cola, which has a contract with KU and has also done special bottles at other universities, is making the commemorative Coke bottle for the start of the 2015-2016 school year. The bottle will be an 8-ounce glass bottle with the KU 150 logo on it.

Larkin said 74,000 of the bottles will be ordered. The majority of them will be sold by KU Dining at the approximately 20 retail dining locations on campus, such as the restaurants in the food courts located in the Kansas Union and Wescoe Hall and the Hawk Shop convenience stores.

The commemorative Coke bottles will have the traditional Coca-Cola logo on one side of the bottle and the KU 150 logo on the other. The bottles will sell for $2.50 each or $12.50 for a six pack, Larkin said, and be available toward the end of August.

“It’s one of many ways we’re celebrating the 150th anniversary of KU,” she said.
