Two arrested on suspicion of prostitution-related charges after police search Lawrence massage parlor

A Lawrence man and woman were arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of crimes related to prostitution at a Lawrence massage parlor just off of Sixth Street, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Wednesday.

Chen Li, 50, is suspected of “promoting the sale of sexual relations,” and Guihong Xiao, 45, is suspected of both “promoting the sale” of and “selling sexual relations,” according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office has yet to file charges.

Li and Xiao were booked into the jail Tuesday after officers served and conducted search warrants on Spring Massage, 600 Lawrence Ave., and a Lawrence residence, McKinley said. Investigators were seeking additional evidence related to sexual crimes alleged to have occurred at the massage parlor, McKinley said.

“We conducted interviews and collected a large amount of evidence throughout the day,” McKinley said. “The arrests were made following that process.”

McKinley said the searches and arrests were the culmination of a joint investigation with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office that had been underway for several months.

In 2013, Li and Xiao pleaded no contest to charges of promoting prostitution after a police raid on two massage businesses in Bonner Springs, according to municipal court records. A Bonner Springs municipal court judge found Li and Xiao guilty and both were required to pay a $600 fine and court costs. They did not receive jail sentences because the crimes were city misdemeanor offenses, a Bonner Springs municipal court employee told the Journal-World.

Promoting the sale of sexual relations is a felony in Kansas.

Li and Xiao are in the Douglas County Jail without bond, pending a charging decision and their first appearance in court.

Spring Massage, at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Sixth Street, is listed on a number of online “erotic massage” websites. Multiple online postings list the price for an hour-long service at Spring Massage as $60, cash only.

Attempts to reach Spring Massage for comment were unsuccessful.

McKinley said the investigation is ongoing. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s policy is not to release booking photos before first appearances.
