Bill Self met with new Kansas University women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider last week when Schneider was on campus for his job interview.

“I was very impressed. He has energy, is very knowledgeable, is very driven. That was obvious in my talk with him. He’s rock-solid to me,” Self, KU’s men’s coach, said Wednesday, asked about the former Stephen F. Austin coach who held his introductory news conference Tuesday when Self was out of town on a recruiting trip.

“I think the young ladies are going to be really pleased. Certainly, he did an unbelievable job at Stephen F. Austin,” Self added of Schneider, who went 108-49 in five years at SFA after compiling a 306-72 mark in 12 seasons at Emporia State. He led the Hornets to the 2010 NCAA Div. II national title.

Self knew of Schneider’s dad, Bob, before meeting Brandon. Bob Schneider went 1,045-293 in a 43-year career as a high school and college women’s coach in Texas.

“I don’t know if people realize the job and the tradition his father started at Canyon High School,” Self said. “It’s one of the premier basketball programs, not in the state of Texas, but the country. His dad is a legend. Brandon has been raised with it (basketball). I think he’s going to do really well here.”

Games talk: Self on Wednesday said the Jayhawks would begin practicing for the World University Games “right when summer school starts, the week of June 7, sometime around there.”

He said he had no news on if he’d hold tryouts or issue invitations for any available spots on the 12-player U.S./KU roster for the Games, July 3-14 in South Korea.

“I’ll get organized on that after recruiting is done. We don’t know what our full complement of players will be,” Self said. “I’m still working on that. I don’t know yet.”

KU currently has 10 scholarship players, including incoming freshman Carlton Bragg, who will compete in the Games. Freshman Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk cannot play on the team because he is not a U.S. citizen. KU has three scholarships left to award in recruiting.

KU will meet Team Canada in a pair of exhibition games June 23 and 26 in Sprint Center. Williams Fund sales have begun. General public sales begin May 13.
