100 years ago: Cornerstone laid at new Haskell gymnasium

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 22, 1915:

  • “Informally but appropriately the laying of the cornerstone of the new gymnasium at Haskell Institute – a $50,000 building – was celebrated today at 1 o’clock. The stone selected is upon one side of the main entrance. Later it will be appropriately engraved. The feature of the event was a short address by Supt. J. R. Wise, who made his remarks educational in the main…. Within the cornerstone, for the perusal of the generation that is here when the building crumbles, perhaps, were enclosed the following articles: Copies of the Indian Leader, and Haskell Y. M. C. A. Bulletin, a copy of the Haskell art calendar and this year’s calendar, with a complete list of the enrollment of 826; cuts of the secretary of the interior and commissioner of Indian affairs, the complete enrollment of the employes of the Institute, names of the officers of the various school organizations.”
  • “Mrs. Patee, who has been very ill for a long time, will be taken to Kansas City today. The surgeons at the Rosedale hospital, where she will be, will use the x-ray this afternoon before operating. Mrs. Patee has serious stomach trouble and in order to determine the cause an operation was necessary. The patrons of her Nickel have missed her cheery face at the window for the past month and hope for her speedy recovery. Mrs. Patee is very well known in Lawrence and her friends are much concerned about her illness.”
  • “Work at the Country club is progressing in a very pleasing manner. The frame of the house is up and the other work is being carried on in a rapid manner. Mr. Constant is doing all possible to have the house ready for occupancy as soon as he can. The work on the house was delayed on account of the cold weather but the men have been working every fit day and some days that were not fit…. The natural water on the ground will be used as the source of supply. There is a good spring near the south line of the land and the plans are to build a receiving basin and have the water pumped to a large tank which will be situated at the highest point…. The water is of an exceptionally good quality and will answer all the needs of the country club.”
  • “Harlan Russel, former star athlete of the Lawrence High School, spoke to the boys of the freshman club last night on the effects of cigarettes on the high school boys. Mr. Russell emphasized the fact that the effects of cigarettes were disastrous not only to the boy’s athletic ambition but to his ability as a student.”
  • “Fire which originated from an unknown cause last night at 3:45 o’clock did considerable damage to the Tarpy machine shop on West 6th street. The fire was well started before it was discovered but was soon extinguished by the fire department.”
  • “George M. Griffin broke one of the bones of his right forearm a day or two ago while cranking an automobile. The fractures is said to have not been particularly serious, but has caused him great pain. It is mending nicely.”
