Power restored, road reopened following early morning hit-and-run

Westar Energy has restored power to about 50 customers following an early-morning crash that destroyed a utility pole.

The road that was closed while workers replaced the pole has reopened.

Lawrence Police were called to an address in the 3200 block of West Ninth Street shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, after a driver crashed into a pole.

The impact split the utility pole, which collapsed and disrupted power to about 50 customers. The power lines were on top of the car according to radio traffic.

Westar crews were able to restore power to all customers by 3 a.m.

A witness told officers that two people were seen running away from the car just after the crash.

Police located at least one of the car’s occupants about an hour later. According to radio traffic, that person had pieces of broken glass in their hair.

West Ninth Street was closed until about 7:30 a.m. between Chalk Hill Court and Holiday Drive while Westar crews replaced the utility pole that was destroyed in the crash.

No injuries were reported in the crash.
